Lawmaker seeks more budget for livestock, dairy and poultry
Senator Cynthia Villar said she is proposing to the Department of Agriculture (DA) to realign its budget proposal to allocate more on the livestock, poultry and dairy subsectors instead of exhausting all funds for the development of crops alone.
“I am asking [Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol] to increase the budget for livestock, poultry and dairy because this sector produces 33% of their output,” said Villar.
“Ang liit-liit ng budget na binigay nila so sabi ko dapat fair. Sabi ko, parang mali iyan, we will reallocate so that we give the budget where it is due. Kasi lahat ng budget nila dinala nila sa crops,” she added, explaining that DA’s fund allotted to a subsector should correspond to its contribution to the agriculture sector.
For decades, the agency has been pouring most of its funds to the development of the crops subsector particularly on rice with the aims of achieving the long-yearned-for self sufficiency on the staple grain, a policy which Piñol is also pushing for.
However, the crops subsector accounts for more than half of agricultural output, a fact which easily shows why the agency prefers to allot the bulk of its budget on its development.
