Sugar industry expresses concerns about possible next SRA chief
Sugar industry stakeholders have expressed concern over the bet of Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol to be the next head of the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA).
Now that former SRA chief Anna Rosario Paner already submitted her resignation to Malacanañg, Piñol has re-endorsed Hermenegildo Serafica as replacement.
“Ang fear namin since from the start Piñol has been pushing for Serafica, that he will be another Piñol puppet. And he will sell out the industry,” a reliable industry source said.
A representative to sugar planters, Serafica sat at the SRA board whose term expired last June.
The source said planters made up a meager population among sugar industry players but this may not be the greatest hurdle for him to win the confidence of stakeholders.
“He belongs to planters. That’s the smallest in terms of membershing among the industry players. I don’t know if he’s going to get the cooperation. Maybe. Nobody would probably go against an administrator. But I don’t think everybody would be comfortable dealing with a sneaky person,” the source said as she presented documents to reporters which shows that Serafica may have played a role in the hiring for the ‘overpaid’ consultant which earned the ire of President Rodrigo Duterte.
