DA bolsters HVCDP crops thru outreach programs

The High Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP) of the Department of Agriculture IX (DA) administered some of its champion commodities to local farmers of Gutalac and Labason, Zamboanga del Norte during its outreach programs held recently.

Over 100 farmers per site participated in the said activity which earned them free seedlings of coffee, atsuete, cacao and assorted vegetable seed like pechay, stringbeans, and okra.

“HVCDP is working hard to promote the plantation of industrial crops in every farm area,” said Reynaldo Campomanes, DA Operations Chief, encouraging the farmers to cultivate potential HVCDP crops such as coffee, atsuete, rubber and cacao.

Also present during the event were the representatives from DA’s Regional Crop Protection Center (RCPC) and Regional Soils Laboratory (RSL) who reminded the farmers of the importance of crop protection against pest and infection and soil testing and analysis respectively.

HVCDP’s Engr. Richard Daguio also delivered a lecture on plantation establishment embarking on land preparation and hole digging down to the actual planting and nurturing of coffee plants.

Last month, HVCDP kicked off the first leg of its outreach programs in the province of Zamboanga Sibugay mainly in the municipalities of R.T. Lim and Tungawan.
