DA wants to tap unused fund under US PL 480 program
The Department of Agriculture (DA) wants to tap unused funds under the the US Public Law 480 (US PL 480) program, which was enacted decades ago by the American government so it can help developing countries like the Philippines using its rich agricultural resources.
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said that before President Rodrigo Duterte meets with US President Donald Trump next month, he will first talk to Duterte about the utilization of the funds under PL 480.
“We’re now preparing for the arrival of Trump second week of November. I already have listed down the things that I would like to brief President Duterte about. First, the utilization of the remaining P1.5 billion under US PL 480 which has stayed idle for many years,” Piñol said.
Since it was launched here in the 1990s, the Philippines already got hundreds of millions of dollars worth of grant from the US under PL 480.
According to Piñol, there is still about P1.5 billion worth of funds under PL 480 stuck at the National Treasury, which were left unused because there are no programs to use it for.
“It has got to be included in the budget of DA for it to be utilized. We can used this in 2019 but it’s a good thing that we know about it now so we could prepare right away,” Piñol further said, adding that he intends to use the fund for the country’s proposed dairy program.
