Farmers and Fishers hold protest at DA, BFAR, DAR and DENR
As the world celebrates the 38th Year of World Food Day, a group of farmers and fishers hold their protest action today in front of certain government agencies to express their dismay over government’s continued negligence on agriculture and fishery, resulting to worsening hunger and poverty in this sector.
“38 taon nang ginugunita ang World Food Day, pero wala pa ring nabago sa kalagayan naming mga mangingisda’t magsasaka. Patuloy pa rin kaming naghihirap, walang makain, at walang matirhan,” said Pablo Rosales of PANGISDA, the current Cluster member of National Movement for Food Sovereignty (NMFS).
Now, the group is calling for genuine development program for agriculture and fishery that will truly cater to the improvement on the lives of small food producers in the country.
“Kung talagang sinsero ang gobyerno na paunlarin ang sakahan at pangisdaan, sa halip na unahin nila ang pagtanggal sa Rice QR, dapat unahin muna nila ang pagpapaunlad sa aming sector na siyang nagpapakain ng lipunan. Hindi yung land conversion dito, water conversion duon, at forest conversion pa para kanino? Kundi sa mga malalaking korporasyon,” said Trinidad Domingo of KABAPA, current cluster lead of NMFS.
The protest action is happening today in front of the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) and will march to the four agencies– Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
