School-on-air for farmers returns to Region 3
The Department of Agriculture (DA) and Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) have launched the school-on-the-air (SOA) for Central Luzon farmers to keep them updated with the latest rice farming technologies.
SOA started airing on DWRW 95.1 FM on October 14 . It airs every Saturday from 11:30 AM to 12:00PM.
“SOA is bridging the gap between the government and the rice farming community here,” said Felicito Espiritu Jr., DA-RFO 3 information officer.
“We will interview PhilRice experts as to how Filipino farmers can become more competitive. We will also tackle relevant issues related to agriculture,” he added.
During the launching in Candaba, Pampanga, DA and PhilRice distributed 30 portable radios to farmer-participants. They also launched Palay Tambayan, a mini library that houses publications on technological breakthroughs in rice farming.
The radio program is part of DA’s project dubbed as Maparalang Ortelanu, which means wise farmers in Kapampangan.
It will have a research component to assess farmers’ knowledge gain through a monthly written exam. DA also conducted a pretest to evaluate their knowledge on farming. A graduation ceremony for the farmers will be held in December.
