Villar pushes for utilization of inbred rice seeds instead of hybrid rice seeds
Senator Cynthia Villar is pushing for the utilization of more inbred rice in the country instead of hybrid rice seeds, which is in contrast with what Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol wants.
Villar, who also serves as chairperson of the Senate’s Committee on Agriculture and Food, said that there is a misconception among officials of the Department of Agriculture (DA) over the use of hybrid rice seeds over inbred varieties.
“Meron silang mga belief eh… hybrid is better than inbred. Hindi natin gusto pangunahan natin sila sa kanilang mga belief. We are dividing. Para walang arguement, kalahati inbred, kalahati hybrid,” she said
“Kasi inbred, it performs just like the hybrid but its cost is only 15 percent of the hybrid seeds. Para yung pera nating maliit, mapakinabangan na mabuti,” she added.
Villar said this after disclosing that she had to realign DA’s proposed budget for 2018, which stands at P57 billion.
“I realigned. I put the budget to more important things. Hindi ako nagdagdag. Inayos ko para mapunta yung rice seeds para mamigay ng inbred seeds sa mga coops and irrigators para ituro sa mga farmers how to produce inbred seeds that will give them yield of 6 MT per hectare, ngayon four lang,” she further said.
