Villar realigns DA’s budget for next year
Senator Cynthia Villar, chairperson of the Senate’s Committee on Agriculture and Food, said that she has realligned the budget of the Department of Agriculture (DA) for next year so it can be used “on more important things.”
“You have to plan well your budget para mapupunta dun sa mga bagay na mag-iimprove ng lives of farmers and fisherfolks,” Villar said.
Villar, who is also the chairperson of the Senate’s Finance Committee, said that they are inclined to approve the DA budget of P57 billion for 2018, which is slightly higher than this year’s P54 billion.
The lawmaker said that she opted to increase the budget for livestock and poultry, while slashing the funding on rice seeds procurement.
Villar earlier said that there is a need for a fair distribution of the budget on agriculture to fund development of various industries, particularly in the poultry sector, which is still reeling from the effects of avian influenza.
