8,000 goats from US, eyed to boost local milk output
In a bid to buoy the country’s milk production, the Department of Agriculture (DA) said it plans to import next year about 8,000 dairy goats from the United States in 2019.
“We will roll out a four-year dairy goat program starting 2019, and it will involve the importation of about 8,000 dairy goats with superior genes,” Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol was quoted assaying in a Tuesday news report.
The official has requested from the agricultural counselor of the US Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service in Manila a meeting with the US-based dairy goat raisers to push for the said project.
The importation of dairy goats is expected to boost local milk production to at least meet a tenth of yearly domestic requirement by 2022.
