BOC told to create regional anti-smuggling task forces
Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III has directed Customs Commissioner Isidro Lapeña to spearhead the creation of interagency task forces at the regional level to unify and beef up anti-smuggling operations in the provinces.
This was after Bureau of Customs (BOC) and Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) were told to intensify their monitoring of smuggling activities around rice and four other commodities.
Dominguez particularly told these agencies to focus on rice, fuel, steel, cigarettes and other food and agricultural product such as chicken, onions and garlic in beefing up the governments’ efforts to combat smuggling.
According to the Finance chief, the cooperation among the officials of BOC and the BIR, along with other relevant government agencies, should go down to the regional level to ensure that provincial operations against suspected illicit trading practices are well coordinated.
