DA and DND launch project to cut out middlemen
The Departments of Agriculture and of National Defense have partnered to launch Tuesday the Karne, Isda Supply Suporta sa Masa at Ekonomiya (KISS ME) project which is designed to reduce multiple layers of middlemen by providing direct access of meat and fish products to the market.
“The expected results would be affordable food commodities for consumers, better income for the food producers and most of all, a viable livelihood activity for the country’s heroes,” Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said in a statement.
To achieve this, the agency will provide cold storage facilities such as freezers and chillers to maintain the temperature necessary in ensuring the freshness of agriculture and fishery products.
The DA targets to procure by 2022 about 100 outlets of fresh chicken, pork, beef and fish stored in a chiller or freezer.
The KISS ME project, to be set initially in local military camps, will be brought to housing subdivisions and population centers via sari-sari stores if consumers react positively to the practice.
