DA sees 4Ps pushing up agri growth
The Department of Agriculture is looking into utilizing the budget government’s Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program in its push to improve agricultural productivity.
“With a budget of P78-B for 2018, an amount which is P18-B bigger than the budget of the whole Department of Agriculture (DA), the 4Ps program could really provide a huge positive impact in lowering poverty in the countryside,” said Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol in his Facebook post.
Rolled out during the administration of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, the government’s 4Ps was a anti-poverty scheme patterned after models in South America, specifically Mexico and Brazil.
But however “noble” the intention of the program which has served a financial source for families living below the poverty line, the Mr. Pinol noted that the program calls for “a thorough review” with the program’s funds reportedly taken also a source of corruption to many a government official.
“This money should be used to pumpprime greater productivity rather than encourage mendicancy,” the Agriculture chief added.
