DA set to discuss trade deals at APEC
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol has joined the cabinet secretaries to join the Philippine delegation for an official visit to Vietnam for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.
“President [Rodrigo] Duterte asked me yesterday to attend some bilateral talks with several member nations of APEC,” the official said in his Facebook post on Thursday.
Earlier this week, Piñol said he is looking to have a dialogue with Papua New Guinea PNG to thresh out issues over the Oceanian country’s long standing demand that tuna industry players that harvest in its waters, including Philippine companies, process all their catch in its ports, as well.
To seek leniency from PNG, the Agriculture chief will propose to gather Philippine investors to develop the country’s rice lands.
PNG, whose main income generator derives from the tuna industry, has been recording annual growth in rice consumption in recent years but continues to import the grain to fulfill 100% of its demand.
