DA wants to tweak priorities to improve food production
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said he wants to “tweak” the priorities of the Department of Agriculture (DA) in order to improve food production in the country.
According to Piñol, he agrees with President Rodrigo Duterte when the latter said that the reason why the country can’t solve hunger is because many agriculture lands are being used to produce “cash crops” or commodities that are meant for export.
“I agree with him. Right now, we are too focused on export markets, forgetting that that we have 105 million people in this country to feed,” Piñol said.
“This is a big market that local producers can’t even satisfy,” he added.
As part of the solution, Piñol said there will be a “tweaking of priorities” within the DA.
“For 2018, lahat ng mga foreign marketing expos, pipiliin na lang namin. We will focus on areas where we have existing market. All the others will be scrapped. There will be a radical shift sa prioritization ng aming mga marketing egagements abroad,” Piñol further said.
