PH to help boost PNG’s rice and coconut industries
The Philippines has offered its rice technology to develop Papua New Guinea’s rice and coconut industries.
“The coconut industry, along with other agricultural potentials, has largely been underdeveloped and the country has been relying mainly on its fishing industry for its economic survival,” Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Pinol said in his Facebook post.
The Philippines, although still relying on imports to fill at least a fifth of its demand on the staple grain, adopts advanced rice farming technology, Piñol noted, while also priding on the local coconut industry which has gained footing in several foreign markets.
“I will send you the best experts in these fields to help you,” Piñol quoted President Rodrigo Duterte as saying to Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Peter O’Neill during the sidelines of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Vietnam.
The Agriculture chief said he will deploy December this year soil and irrigation experts to the Oceanian country to conduct initial tests and surveys.
