Protesters had ‘homeless dinner’ during ASEAN Summit Gala dinner
Some protesters in Manila had what they call “homeless dinner” last night while the ASEAN 50th Anniversary Gala, which was hosted by the Philippine government, served “lavish” dinner to world leaders.
The ASEAN 50th Anniversary Gala was held last night at the SMX Convention Center in the Mall of Arena Complex.
The prestigious event was graced by at least 1,300 guests— comprised of leaders from the 10 Southeast Asian member-states and dialogue partners, their representatives, diplomats, government officials, and businessmen.
Some of the leaders that attended the event were no less than President Rodrigo Duterte himseld, US President Donald Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Malaysian PM Dato Sri Najib Bin Tun Abdul Razak, Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, Vietnam PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Chinese PM Li Keqiang, Japanese PM Shinzo Abe, Indonesian PM Joko Widodo, Russian PM Dmitry Medvedev, Indian PM Narendra Modi, Republic of Korea President Moon Jae, New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern, Singaporean PM Lee Hsien Loong, and Brunei Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah.
The gathering was faced with criticisms as the Philippine government reportedly spent millions to make it happen.
An earlier statement showed that thousands of small-scale farmers and fisheres are now decrying the 50 years of ASEAN as 50 years of agricultural backwardness and declining food security and food sovereignty.
Critics said that as ASEAN leaders exclusively celebrated its 50th anniversary, at least a thousand small-scale farmers and fishers from across differents parts of the country still suffer from poverty.
