Sugar output down 7.21% year-on-year
Local sugarcane output fell 7.21% annually towards the end of October, according to the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA).
The agency’s latest data showed that test raw sugar production as of Oct 29 aas pegged at 137,241 metric tons (MT), lower than the 148,060 MT booked in the comparable period last year.
Ton canes milled during the period stood at 1.67 million MT, 8.29% down from the 1.82 million MT recorded in the same period last year.
For this crop year 2017 to 2018, the SRA expects local sugarcane to reach 2.38 million metric tons (MT) or 4.8% lower than previous crop year’s 2.5 million MT which was a record production for the industry.
A sugar crop year in the Philippines runs from September through August.
