Typhoon Urduja’s damage to agri sector rise to P370M
The agriculture sector incurred a damage of as much as 370 million due to tropical depression Urduja, which hit some parts of Eastern Visayas and Bicol region.
Based on its initial report, DA said that Urduja’s damages to agriculture sector amounte to P369.94 million, with crops experiencing the worst impact.
The damage to crops particularly covered 25,348 hectares of agricultural areas in the Bicol region and Eastern Visayas, with estimated volume of production loss at 7,880 metric tons (MT).
“Significant increase in damages and losses have been reported in rice and high value crops. Most affected rice plantings are at sowing, seedling, newly transplanted and vegetative stages, which majority are totally damaged,” DA-Field Programs Operational Planning Division chief Christopher Morales said in the report.
Meanwhile, significant losses were seen in the high value crops, particularly in the production of banana in Leyte and Northern Samar. Current damage is about P76 million or 21 percent of total production losses.
