Agri sector starts to incur damage due to Mt. Mayon eruption
The Department of Agriculture (DA) said the agriculture sector already started incurring slight damages due to Mt. Mayon eruption in Albay.
In its latest data, DA said damages and losses in Region 5 particularly on high value crops already amounted to P1.56 million, affecting 112 hectares of agricultural areas with an estimated volume of production loss at 42 metric tons (MT).
For vegetables, damages cost P1.08 million affecting 13 hectares with volume of 35 MT. Affected crops include ampalaya, baguio beans, eggplant, okra, sitao, sayote, sili, tomato and upo, which are all on their fruiting stage.
Mayon Volcano remains at alert level 4 with continuous episodes of intense but sporadic lava fountaining from the summit crater lasting nine minutes up to an hour
Lava fountains already reached about 400 meters to 500 meters high and generate ash plumes that reach three kilometers to 5 kilometers above the crater.
As of now, the number of affected farmers stood at 141.
