DENR shuts two big firms for alleged illegal tree cutting
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has suspended the operations of Dacon Group of Companies (DGC) for allegedly breaching its contract with government for cutting down residual trees.
In a statement, DENR Region director Felix Mirasol Jr. confirmed that they have issued the suspension order on DACON which is operating in the province through its companies, the South Davao Development Co., Inc (SODACO) and the Sirawai Plywood & Lumber Corp. (SPLC) in Sibuco town.
Under the Industrial Forest Management Agreements (IFMAs), firms are allowed to harvest trees from wstablished tree plantations but are prohibited from cutting residual trees.
Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu said that the agency will conduct “an exhaustive probe… to see if there have been violations in their permits.”
President Rodrigo Duterte was said to direct Cimatu to issue the closure order during a Cabinet meeting on Monday after the executive was shown a five-minute video of the deforested portion of the Zamboanga mountain range where flash floods brought down logs that rampaged through the coastal communities.
