Palay output improves in Q4 of last year
Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said that palay production has improved in the last quarter of 2017, sending the entire output on a upward trajectory for the entire year.
PSA said the October to December 2017 palay production at 7.32 million metric tons (MT) was higher than the 2016 level of 7.01 million MT.
Harvest area, however, was lower by 0.96 percent, from 1.88 million hectares to 1.86 million hectares this year, while yield improved from 3.73 MT per hectare to 3.93 MT per hectare or by 1.71 percent.
This had sent palay production for the entire year of 2017 (January to December) to the level of 19.28 million MT, 9.36 percent above the 2016 output of 17.63 million MT.
Harvest area also expanded from 4.56 million hectares to 4.81 million hectares. Yield, on the other hand, was up by 3.54 percent, from 3.87 MT per hectare in 2016 to 4.01 MT in 2017.
PSA said the regions that contributed significant increments in production were Cagayan Valley (2.40 percent), Central Luzon (3.15 percent), Bicol Region (0.74 percent) and Central Visayas (0.59 percent).
The increases in output were attributed to increased harvest area and yield in Cagayan Valley due to normal delivery of irrigation water, less weather disturbance and sustained used of hybrid seeds.
There was also an increased yield in Central Luzon resulting from the use of better seeds, close monitoring of pests and diseases and sufficient water supply, as well as Increments in area harvested in CAR, Bicol Region, and Central Visayas due to sufficient water supply during the cropping period.
