PH sugar output increases slightly
Local sugar production has reached 516,165 metric tons (MT) within the third week of December, 5.47 percent higher than the 489,407 MT registered a year ago, according to data from the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA).
The latest figures from the SRA, as cited by a news report, showed that output as of Dec. 17 has totaled 10.323 million 50-kilogram bags (LKg), higher than last year’s 9.788 million LKg.
Of this, about 81.72 percent, or 421,821 MT, was produced by Negros-based millers.
The agency forecasts the country’s total sugar output in the current crop year to hit 2.38 million metric tons (MMT), 4.8 percent lower than the previous crop year’s 2.5 MMT which is pegged a record-high for domestic sugarcane production.
A sugar crop year in the country runs from September to August.
