Evasco doubts there is rice shortage
Cabinet Secretary Leoncio Evasco Jr. doubts that there is rice shortage in National Food Authority (NFA) rice the way the state-run grains agency may have implied when citing reasons for importation.
Evasco is the chair of NFA Council, which approves or rejects proposals on rice importation.
According to him, the Council wants to find out if NFA indeed ran out of supply or it just wants to “pressure” the government into allowing it to buy more rice overseas.
“Is it true or just drama to pressure the council to purchase rice?” Evasco said in news reports.
NFA said its buffer stocks now stood at 64,000 metric tons (MT) or just good to last for two days, a shortfall from its mandate to maintain a 15-days buffer stock at any given time.
As a result, NFA decided to stop supplyin rice nationwide, which could later on trigger a price increase in commercial rice.
