GFNI to file charges against Brooke’s Point mayor for demolition of mine area
Global Ferronickel Holdings, Inc. said its subsidiary Ipilan Nickel Corp. is set to file charges against Brooke’s Point Mayor Mary Jean Feliciano and the members of the group she allegedly led to demolish the firm’s facilities.
In a statement the firm said it will file additional criminal, civil and administrative actions to hold the mayor and her companions accountable “for all the immediate and natural consequences of the forcible entry and destruction of properties.”
“They forcibly destroyed guard houses, gate posts and fences, among others, to gain access to the mine site premises and then completely demolished the campsite office building,” Ipilan Nickel said.
“Their actions had opened up the entire Contract Area to various forms of destruction, pilferage and hazards as total strangers made their way into the area unimpeded,” it added.
A known anti-mining advocate, the mayor has long expressed disapproval of the mining project, accusing it of posing danger to Brooke’s Point environment.
