Harabas attack! Pangasinan town to declare state of emergency after army worm attack

The Sangguniang Bayan of Bayambang is mulling the declaration of a state of calamity in few barangays of the town due to serious infestation wrought by army worms, called by local farmers as “harabas”.

Ricardo de la Masa, the town’s municipal agriculturist, said the SP expressed concern over the continuous spread of the infestation which has affected farmers who planted onion immediately after harvesting their rice crop.

He said if the SP placed Bayambang under the state of calamity, the municipal government would use part of its calamity fund in finding an effective solution to stop the infestation.

Dela Masa already submitted a report to the office of Mayor Cesar Quiambao that at least 52 hectares of onion farms were already damaged in barangays Manambong Sur and Norte while San Gabriel II registered almost the same damage.

Farmers are seeking the most effective measures, including chemicals that could stop the infestation.

The municipal agriculture office as of the moment is helpless in containing the infestation.

The attack by army worms on onion plantation in Pangasinan started during the onset of the cold weathers, farmers recalled.

Also affected by the pest are onion plantations in the towns of Bautista, Villasis, Sto. Tomas, and Alcala. (PNA)
