Importation gets green light from NFA
Even if there is no rice shortage, NFA Council, the highest policy-making body of National Food Authority (NFA), already gave the green light to the state-run grains agency’s request to import 250,000 metric tons (MT) of rice.
The purpose of the importation is to replenish NFA’s depleting buffer stocks and to stabilize the rising prices of commercial rice, Cabinet Secretary Leoncio Evasco, who chairs the NFA Council, said.
The importation will be done through an open tender scheme, while the delivery of the imported rice will be in June.
This, since Evasco said there is no need rush the importation anyway.
“We assure the public that there is no rice shortage,” Evasco further said.
