Pinol sees PH bananas finally shipped to Australia
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol is confident that locally grown bananas will now be able to penetrate the Australian market after more than two decades of impregnable impasse.
Pinol issued the statement in reaction to Amanda Gorely, Australian Ambassador to the Philippines, who said that Canberra is willing to assist interested exporters to finally break into the Australian fruit market.
It was noted that Filipino exporters, particularly in the banana industry, have found it difficult to pass Australia’s stringent animal health and plant regulations.
He added that he is willing to broker the talks between Australia and Filipino banana growers.
To date, the Philippines exports its bananas to Japan, Korea and other major Asian markets. Australia, however, has been a tough nut to crack, specially when it comes to protecting its own banana industry.
