Duterte wants a face-to-face meeting with rice traders
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said President Rodrigo Duterte instructed the National Food Authority (NFA) to invite the country’s big rice traders to “share coffee” with him to discuss the national rice supply situation.
“You invite them. Sabihin mo mag kape lang kami,” Duterte told NFA Administrator Jason Aquino, as cited by Piñol.
This, after industry stakeholders suggested that Duterte should persuade the big traders not to hoard rice stocks and manipulate prices in the market.
“The President said he would like to convey to the traders his wish that the Filipino consumers would not be made to suffer from high prices of rice,” Piñol said.
This was the first time that Piñol attended the NFA Council meeting since he was appointed Agriculture Secretary.
