Fisherfolks score Esperon on defeatist stance in PH Rise
Militant fisherfolk alliance Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (PAMALAKAYA-Pilipinas) scored National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon Jr. for his “craven position” in backing the joint exploration with China in the Philippine Rise – which they called as a one-sided and self-serving deal with Beijing.
Fernando Hicap, PAMALAKAYA chairperson, stressed that Esperon only echoed President Rodrigo Duterte’s subservient position to allow Chinese-backed companies to explore in the Philippine territorial waters.
On Wednesday, Esperson was quoted saying that a joint mineral exploration with China in the Philippine Rise (formerly called Benham Rise) does not equate to surrendering sovereignty to Beijing.
But PAMALAKAYA warned a repeat of what happened in the West Philippine Sea, where China started with a joint maritime seismic undertaking in 2008, and eventually building massive infrastructures and militarizing shoals.
