Heineken withdraws ad after racism complaints
Heineken has taken down a commercial for its calorie-light beer after receiving online backlash for being “terribly racist.”
In the 30-second ad with the tag line “Sometimes lighter is better,” a bartender slides a bottle of Heineken light and let it pass several colored customers, including black people, before it stops at a lighter-skinned woman.
Hip-hop star Chance the Rapper tweeted that the commercial was “terribly racist,” adding that some companies were purposely “putting out noticeably racist ads so they can get more views.”
Heineken pulled out the ad and released a statement where it noted of its “diverse marketing that shows there’s more that unites us than divides us,” while admitting that this time, “we missed the mark.”
The beer company was commended last year for its “Open Your World” commercials that featured people of diverse backgrounds and views.
