PH rice output to hit 12M tons, drop in imports seen
The Philippines’s milled rice output is seen breaching 12 million metric tons (MMT) this year, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) said as more farmers continued planting the staple due to the extended implementation of the special treatment on rice and favorable weather condition.
In its latest World Agricultural Production report, the USDA said that Manila’s milled rice production is expected to increase by 2.7 percent from 11.7 MMT, adding that the quantitative restriction on rice imports remained to be the major incentives for palay farmers.
With the projected increase in production, USDA said that the state-run National Food Authority is expected to cut down importation to about 1.3 MMT from 1.7 MMT.
Earlier, the Department of Agriculture said that paddy rice output is expected to reach 20.3 MMT, which is about 96 percent of the country’s sufficiency level.
At a milling recovery rate of 65 percent, the actual milled rice to be produced in the country may reach 13.22 MMT.
