Sugarcane farmers paid a scanty wage of P400/month

The National Federation of Sugar Workers (NFSW) have called on President Rodrigo Duterte to resolve the plight of sugarcane farmers, some of whom are paid less than a thousand pesos per month for hours of labor.

“200 kada kinsenas! Iyan ang sahod na natatanggap ng mga manggagawa sa tubuhan sa Hacienda Raymunda, Silay City, Negros Occ na pagmamayari ni Domingo Lacson,” read the farmer’s group’s Facebook post which was accompanied by photos of sugarcane workers showing their pay slips.

“Nanatiling hamon kay President Duterte na tuparin ang mga ipinangako niyang pagbabago at pag-unlad,” the NFSW said.

Two years have passed since the Duterte administration was installed and yet farmers see their conditions still unimproved; they still don’t own the lands they till and they still receive meager pay for an onerous work — all this without the assurance of tenure.
