Zooey Deschanel explains why organic food costs more
In the advent of healthy living, people are now more inclined to go all natural diets and including fruits and vegetables in their diets.
In a recent episode of Our Food’s Roots, New Girl actress Zooey Deschanel said that while many would want to switch to organic fruits and veggies, they are much more expensive.
She interviewed High School teacher Daphne Bradford, who founded the 3 Brains Innovation Project, which encourages students to plant organic fruits and veggies outside Crenshaw High School to get the lowdown on the price difference.
Bradford explained that the advantages to organic produce is that it is free from pesticides, and grown in healthy soil that had no prohibited substances like synthetic fertilizers and pesticides applied to it three years before harvest. She said that the reason why organics are expensive is that because increased labor and distribution costs due to the limited demand.
However, with increased demand, this could drive down cost. Bradford also said that it is important to look at alternatives like growing one’s own organic produce for a healthier and more affordable alternative to market bought organics.
