DA to handle importation of 250,000 MT of rice

As the government eyes to transfer back the supervision over the National Food Authority (NFA) to the Department of Agriculture (DA), the President is also considering to order DA to handle the planned importation of 250,000 metric tons (MT) of rice.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said that the President “is considering the approval of rice importation to be centralized under the Office of DA Undersecretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat”.

This, according to him, is still subject to the review of the Office of the Executive Secretary.

“One, the President expressed his intent to place the National Food Authority (NFA) under the Office of the President,” Roque said.

“Two, in their meeting with the President, rice traders pledged to give at least 700,000 sacks of rice to replenish the NFA stocks sold at P38 per kilo to be sold at P39. The President is considering the approval of rice importation to be centralized under the Office of DA Undersecretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat, subject to the review of the Office of the Executive Secretary,” he added.

Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol confirmed that amid the issue surrounding the possible abolition of NFA Council, the government is still proceeding with the importation of 250,000 MT of rice.

This, according to him, will be done through a government-to-government deal, which should bring in the additional supply by next month until first week of May.
