DA turns over 10 floating tillers in Dumaguete through SAAD
The Department of Agriculture (DA), through Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD), recently distributed 10 floating tillers with a total amount of P600,000.00 in Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental.
A statement showed that the floating tillers were particularly received by eight Farmer Associations (FA) from the SAAD at the Provincial Agricultural Technology Coordinating Office (PATCO).
To eliminate the drudgery of manual land preparation and solve the limitations of the existing hand tractors and hydro tillers, Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) designed and fabricated a floating tiller.
Rice fields with soft, deep mud, peat-like, and low-bulk density soils called ‘laboy’ are very difficult to cultivate using the conventional two-wheel hand tractor or even using a water buffalo. Some farmers manually invert or trample the weeds by feet to prepare this type of soil.
The associations — Tambulan FA, Jilabangan FA, Lag-it FA, Pindahan FA, Tanlad FA, and Siaton municipal federated association — received one unit of floating tiller each, while CATACOFA and Zafia FA got two units each.
“As facilitated by the DA-RFO VII team, the engines were inspected and tested
with the help of the Regional Agricultural Engineering Group prior to turnover to its intended beneficiaries,” DA said.
