EO to be signed to facilitate the transfer of NFA to DA
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said that President Rodrigo Duterte will soon have to sign an Executive Order (EO) so he could formally return the supervision over National Food Authority (NFA) and other government agencies to the Department of Agriculture (DA).
Duterte’s order came after NFA caught itself in many controversial issues, including running out of buffer stocks and failing to convince the NFA Council that there is a need for importation.
Despite all this, the President chose to side with NFA and called to reconstitute NFA Council. As part of this move, he proceeded to remove Cabinet Secretary Leoncio Evasco from the NFA Council.
“The NFA Council has been reorganized with the inclusion of the DA and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). Former council member DBP [Development Bank of the Philippines] was asked to be relieved from the council,” Piñol said.
“The NFA, the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA), and the Fertilizer and Pesticides Authority (FPA) will also be transferred as attached agencies of the DA,” he added.
It was four years ago when NFA, PCA, FPA, and National Irrigation Administration were transferred to the Office of the President.
