Farmers flock DA’s first abaca forum in Mindanao
Amid growing interest towards abaca farming, Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said that over 200 farmers from different areas in Central Mindanao and Davao del Sur have gathered in Cotobato for a two-day forum on Abaca farming led by the Department of Agriculture (DA).
Piñol said the first day of the forum consisted of lectures on how to plant, harvest and market Abaca, while the second day, which will be held today, will involve actual field planting and Abaca stripping.
Lectures on how to plant coffee, cacao, Black Pepper and industrial trees like Falcata and Gmelina was also delivered.
“The Philippine Crop Insurance Corp. and the Agricultural Credit Policy Council (ACPC) also briefed participants on crop insurance and easy access credit,” Piñol said.
“I also briefed participants on the 4Ks Progam of the Department of Agriculture,” he added.
The DA, through the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority and the Office of the Undersecretary for High Value Crops, sponsored the two-day workshop.
