Stakeholders call gov’t to increase buying price of palay
Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (SINAG) is calling on the government to increase the local buying price of palay while the imported supply is yet to come in.
This is amid the importation brouhaha that led to a rift between the National Food Authority (NFA) and its policy-making body NFA Council.
SINAG chair Rosendo So said that amid all the issues surrounding the rice industry right now, what’s important is for the government to make available a much more affordable price in the market.
And then, he said it is also important that the government will finally do something about improving the buying price for palay so farmers would be encouraged to sell to the government.
“Sa ngayon I think papasok ata si Sec. Pinol dun sa bagong [NFA] Council so kung papasok siya I think he propose P20 increase ng buying price. So with that baka makabili ng NFA ng palay dito sa atin local,” So said in a radio interview.
So emphasized that NFA has P7 billion specifically allotted for local procurement of palay.
Still, he said the industry is hoping that the buying price of palay would finally increase to P20 per kilo from P17 per kilo, which has been the standard price for years now.
With the absence of NFA rice in the market, consumers are forced to purchase commercial rice for at least P40 per kilo.
