Garlic farmers in Batanes get access to P30M loan from DA
To boost their production, garlic farmers in Batanes will get access to loans worth P30 million from the Department of Agriculture (DA), a report showed.
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol made this commitment in order to boost the province’s garlic production by 15 percent in 2020.
Batanes is currently producing aromatic pink and white garlic varieties of garlic which are being sold to traders for around P100 per kilogram (kg).
The traders will then sell the garlic in Metro Manila for P250 per kg because of high transportation costs.
Felicisimo Garcia, president of the Itbayat Garlic Producers Association, said logistics issues remains to be one of the problems that hinder the growth of the province’s garlic production.
As for the loan, a statement showed that the loans will be offered to farmers at the rate of P60,000 a hectare with a 6-percent annual interest.
Piñol also promised to put up a solar-powered ice plant and a cold storage facility in Sabtang town to boost the province’s fishing trade.
