Netizens back new DoT chief’s review of Buhay Carinderia

Pinoys are outraged over news that the Department of Tourism’s controversial Buhay Carinderia Project, which was marketed as a program to promote Filipino food, is actually riddled with irregularities after questions surfaced about the bidding and the fund disbursement of the P320 million program.

However, Filipinos on Facebook are seeing newly appointed DoT Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat’s decision to put the project on hold as a positive step in her leadership.

While the project has been suspended pending an audit, netizens have taken to Facebook to sound off on their disappointment over the alleged mismanagement of the project.

“Buhay Carinderia” isn’t even catchy, to begin with. Di nakaka convey ng “tourism” vibe. Mas bagay sya as title for a project na naka focus sa micro-entrepreneurship financing🤨 ,” Facebook user Tim Raphael Tangonan critiqued.

“I hate corruption!”: “I want to ask: ‘WHY HAVE YOU BEEN GIVING CHECKS WHEN THE PROJECT HASN’T ’t EVEN STARTED YET?’ Whoever the organizer is, did it go through proper bidding?’” another netizen, Joey Curamen asked.

“From Buhay Carinderia to Saradong Carinderia real quick Charge them, Secretary!” a quick quip from Tonyo Cruz said.

There are also calls to investigate actor Cesar Montano, who was appointed by President Duterte to the DoT and is now embroiled in the controversy.

“If this government truly hates corruption it should investigate this, and either clear Montano’s name or indict him.” Patoy Isaac suggested.

While many have expressed outrage, shock and suggestions on what other projects the DoT should be promoting, there are those who remain optimistic under the leadership of the newly appointed DoT Secretary.

“Department of Tourism Secretary Berna Romulo is off on the right track! This is exactly the way to do it on your first days in office. I’m liking her so much already because of her non-nonsense management style,” Dindi Tan posted on her status.

“The new Tourism Secretary is starting off on the right foot. Investigating allegations and reviewing the contracts.” Carlos Kahn said.

“…is just happy that she is serious in cleaning up her department,” netizen Jules Cartalaba said in his post. (ANGEL ONG)
