NIA wants to have a budget of P55B next year
The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) has joined the list of government agencies hoping to have a higher budget next year, as it plans to ask for a budget of P55 billion in order to bankroll its infrastructure projects.
“For submission and deliberation with Department of Budget and Management on May 17, our proposed budget for next year is P55.34 billion. Never did NIA has a budget of that scale although we already proposed a more than P50 billion budget last year but it wasn’t granted to us,” NIA Spokesperson Pilipina Bermudez said in a report in Manila Bulletin.
The proposed budget is higher than the agency’s actual budget of P41.6 billion this year.
Bermudez said that aside from the implementation of free irrigation act, NIA will also be needing funds to build more irrigation systems as well as other infrastructure projects.
NIA is the lead government agency mandated to develop all possible sources of water for irrigation, as well as constructs, restores, and rehabilitates irrigation projects for Filipino farmers.
