Anthony Bourdain is the reason why Filipino-owned resto Kaliwa was born in US
Filipina Meshelle Armstrong said her restaurant Kaliwa, a 177-seat Filipino dining place in Washington, was born out of chef and TV host Anthony Bourdain’s encouragement.
Meshelle said that it was Bourdain who told her and her husband, Irish-born chef Cathal Armstrong, to “do it” because a lot of people don’t know Filipino cuisine yet.
Kaliwa, according to a report in ABS-CBN, is a refined Filipino dining in a casual Asian night market setting. It offers Filipino street barbecue, chicken inasal, and lumpia.
For dessert, their halo-halo, sticky rice, and bibingka are among the favorites.
“Kaliwa is kind of a reflection with my wife probably more than anything else. We’re together for 28 years. I kind of fell in love with her culture a long long time ago,” Cathal said in the report.
The restaurant will soon offer isaw and adidas as one its “special offers” starting July.
