Direk Tonette says Stax’s ube has nothing on Manong Sorbetero
Hugot director Antoinette Jadaone may not have her own food blog but she might as well have one because of her delightful Instagram posts about food when she travels.
The blockbuster writer-director recently went to New York and made sure to sample the most popular desserts there and hilariously compared how they fared against Pinoy favorites.
When she was in Bryant Park, she enjoyed an ice cream sandwich from the popular Stax Ice Cream House and ordered ube flavor. She said that Stax’s ube has nothing on Manong Sorbetero’s ice cream on bread.
She still considered that it may be because Americans don’t know how ube tastes like unlike Pinoys who grew up with the beloved flavor.
New York – like this ice cream sandwich ($8) from Stax Ice Cream at Bryant Park. I got ube — na ang pag-pronounce nila ay u-bey from the root word Queen Bey! OMG what sacrilege to the halayang ube rayt??? — for more kulay sa IG. 'Yung ube ay hindi lasang ube – lasang vanilla! They don't know ube like we do!!! Like siryasleh. #nakaluwagluwaginNYC #pagkaingnakaluwagluwag #dessertsofNYC
On the other hand, she recommended the soft serve at Momofuku but she said that not all locations serve the dessert. Its well worth the effort to find one that does, she says.
Blarred!!! Pasensya na! Pero masarap 'tong Cereal Milk soft serve ($5.50) with a crunch (+$1.25) sa Momofuku Milk Bar! All over New York ang branches ng Momofuku – pero hindi lahat nag-seserve ng desserts! So hanapin n'yo na lang, ako pa ba hahanap?! (Init-ulo agad?) May pila, pero worth it, sanay tayo sa pila, 'di ba? Try ko next time 'yung birthday cake nila! Waw, may next time?! #nakaluwagluwaginNYC #pagkaingnakaluwagluwag
She was at first excited about having dessert at Seredipity 3, where John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale had their date in their famous romantic movie of the same name.
She said that while the serving was enough to justify the $14 price tag, she was let down by the ambience which was far from romantic.
Seeing Serendipity 3 – that famous resto from that Kate Beckinsale-John Cusack movie – was hmmm…a letdown. Huhu dito ba talaga sila nag-date? Over frozen hot chocolate ($14)? #nakaluwagluwaginnyc #pagkaingnakaluwagluwag
Well, she did her best with the his and hers straws, that’s for sure. (ANGEL ONG)
