First ‘Barangay Rice Outlet’ now operational
The Department of Agriculture (DA) and National Food Authority (NFA) launched the first Barangay Food Terminal, which will receive a weekly allocation of NFA rice to be sold at P27 per kilo.
The outlet is located in Cagayan de Oro City.
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said this is part of the reforms being done to improve the country’s rice distribution system.
NFA Region X Director Fernando Nuñez and DA X Regional Director Carlene Collado led the launching of a program, which could be replicated in other parts of the country as well, Piñol added.
Traditionally, NFA rice is only sold in retail outlets in public markets by accredited members of the Grains Retailers Conferederation (GRECON) who receive weekly allocations from the NFA.
There were accusations, however, that the system was prone to corruption as some of the rice being allocated to the retailers end up in the warehouses of traders who repack the rice and sell this at the price of commercial rice which is at least P40 per kilo.
