New post-harvest facilities delivered in Region 12
New post-harvest facilities worth P168 million were delivered this week to some farmers’ cooperatives of the Soccsksargen region as part of the Department of Agriculture’s (DA) mechanization program.
The turnover ceremony, which was held in Tupi in South Cotabato, was led by Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol and was attended by more than 500 farmers and fisherfolk from the provinces of South Cotabato, North Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, and General Santos.
The cooperatives particularly received farm equipment and machinery ranging from the expensive combined rice and corn harvester, farm tractors and other implements.
DA Region 12 Director Milagros Casis said that 24 units of the modern Combined Rice and Corn Harvesters were released during the activity as part of DA’s program to mechanize farming in the country.
“The Philippines has one of the lowest farm mechanization rate among ASEAN-member countries prompting the administration of President Rody Duterte to pour billions into the procurement of farm equipment and machinery for distribution to farmers and fisherfolks,” Piñol said.
Moving forward, he said the DA will focus in providing assistance that will enable farmers to improve productivity and increase income, including the provision of efficient credit facilities such as the Production Loan Easy Access and Farm Machineries and Equipment Loan Program.
