Piñol wants to implement rice packaging system this year
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said he wants his plan to change the way rice is being sold in the Philippines to happen within the year.
To be exact, he wants to implement a rice packaging system wherein rice should be sold in per kilo packages and no longer through open stalled boxes.
“It’s a proposal that is being studied and we will have to consult the stakeholders first. We will present to them. Within the year, we have to do it,” Piñol said.
According to him, this will increase the price of rice by around P0.50 a kilo but at least it will make sure that the rice being bought by consumers are safe to eat and can be traced easily since there will be labels on the package.
“If it’s packed, there will be traceability. If there are cases of food poisoning, we will know where it came from and who sold it,” Piñol said.
Ideally, under this system, rice will be packed by 1 kilogram (kg), 2kg, 5kg, 10kg, 25kg and 50kg.
