Sufficient water supply is key to food security in PH
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said the key to food security in the Philippines is sufficient water supply, saying that without it the country will never be self-sufficient in rice.
According to him, there are three important factors needed for successful agriculture and greater productivity which are soil, sunlight and water.
“Our problem in the Philippines is our inability to manage our water resources and even protect the watersheds where the water comes from,” Piñol said.
“The issue boils down to the availability of one very important factor in agriculture – water and how efficiently we exploit and manage this very important resource,” he added.
Moving forward, he said he wants to address this issue by developing small irrigation systems throughout the country.
