Tribes seal deal to supply organic ube, camote to food manufacturing firm
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said members of the tribal communities in Central Mindanao have entered into a marketing deal with a Bulacan-based organic food processing company for the supply of organic purple ube and camote.
The deal with Oh, So Healthy! Foods, according to him, will help Manobo and B’laan Tribes earn a monthly income of about P300,000.
Almay Gaw-See, owner of Oh, So Healthy! Foods, earlier sought the assistance of the Department of Agriculture (DA) regarding her supply of organic purple and camote.
She then told Piñol that she needs an initial supply of 10 metric tons of these high value crops every month and that she currently buys them at P35 per kilo.
Through the help of DA’s Indigenous People’s Office, headed by Camilo Andi Jr., Almay Gaw-See was introduced to the leaders of Manobo and B’laan Tribes who are currently producing the said commodities.
“When the availability of the supply was validated, the Tribal Leaders were asked to meet with Almay Gaw-See on Monday in time with my visit to the Tupi, South Cotabato agriculture station for the distribution of farm machinery and equipment,” Piñol said.
“The deal was sealed with a handshake,” he added.
Moving forward, he said the DA will help these tribes plant more ube and camote.
