Women farmers in Zamboanga receive 1,500 ready-to-lay chickens
The Department of Agriculture (DA), through its Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD) program, distributed more than 1,500 ready-to-lay chickens to four women farmers’ association in Mutia, Zamboanga del Norte.
A part of SAAD’s Chicken Layer Project, a total of 168 women farmers from barangays New Siquijor, Buena Suerte, Diland, and New Land particularly benefited from the project, which amounted to more than P1.8 million.
Each group got eight modules of the so-called egg machines, each containing 48 22-week-old fully-vaccinated chickens.
SAAD Zamboanga del Norte Provincial Coordinator Ronilo Dusaban said the project aims to address nutrition problems in the identified villages and to augment the income of the recipients’ families.
All beneficiaries have undergone training on layer chicken production, financial management, and production recording to help them succeed with the livelihood projects.
Prior to the said distribution, SAAD Zamboanga del Norte had also delivered egg machines to two other municipalities, Salug and Rizal.
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said before that SAAD is one of the programs that the agency offers as a better alternative to conditional cash transfer programs, such as the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps).
