Consumers still waiting for Duterte’s promise of affordable food
Asia-Pacific Network for Food Sovereignty (APNFS) said that two years since President Rodrigo Duterte uttered his promise of affordable food for all Filipinos, the price of the country’s main staple, rice, is still on an uptrend.
“Pangakong murang bigas ngayo’y walang mabiling murang bigas sa palengke,” APNFS said.
“Posible ba ang murang bigas kung ang gastos natin sa produksyon ay mataas at kung hindi tayo aasa sa importasyon ng bigas? Posible ito kung gagampanan ng estado ang responsibilidad nitong unahin ang kapakanan ng mamamayan,” it added.
The group said that instead of focusing on importation, the government must think of ways how to bring down the cost of producing rice in the country.
This, the group said, can be done by giving subsidies to farmers as well as technical support that will train them how to increase their yield.
APNFS said the government should also make sure that NFA is fulfilling its mandate to buy palay from farmers.
